From co-captain Mimi Anthony:
What a day we had. Everything was there - the excitement, the will, the nervousness, the preparations.... We just didn’t follow through. Even though we all are telling ourselves, "I played like crap, it’s all my fault," there was nothing we could do. Gunnery was a completely different team than when we last saw them. They came out fired up, ready to kick our butts. I admit, there were things we could have done a lot better to deny them goals, but the way I see it, Wednesday wasn’t our day. We cannot hang our heads, we cannot take back time, but we can move forward from this. Just because we didn’t play the game of a lifetime, doesn’t mean we didn’t have the best field hockey season Millbrook has ever seen. We are such a special team, and I hope every one of you knows that. Each one of us contributed to a
different aspect of the game which lead to us being the Division Champs! Just because this season is over and the seniors are moving on, doesn’t mean we aren’t a team anymore. I want everyone to look back on this season and remember the good times and the bad, the things we did well together and the things we didn’t. This was truly the best season I have ever had and I want to thank everyone for helping to make it that way. I love you girls, and I hope you all have an amazing break! YEAH FIELD HOCKEY 2006!!!!!!!!!
From Coach Burdis:
Co-Captain Mimi Anthony has said it perfectly-- it just wasn't our day to win. Millbrook gave up two early goals to an aggressive and hungry Gunnery team. Gunnery came prepared to play, and to win. The lady Mustangs' nerves got the better of them for the first half. Second half saw a huge improvement in our level of play but we simply couldn't overcome those two early goals. Nell Burdis notched her first goal of the year on a great cross from Lacy Kelly; Burdis zinged it from mid-circle, a nasty shot to the opposite post. Millbrook had multiple scoring opportunities in the second half and dominated most of the play, until exhaustion set in, and for the last 4 four minutes, goalie Morrison saved the day with one spectacular save after another. We ended our season with our heads high -- that second half, if not pretty, was gritty and showed our true colors.
And what a season we had, accomplishing every goal we set for ourselves: we finished 9th overall in the WNEPSFHA rankings (including all A, B and C schools), our highest finish ever (last year we were 10th), we won our division, a fantastic accomplishment for the team, and we made it to New Englands. Congratulations to an incredible group of young ladies. It was a pleasure coaching them.
