Strong Hold - The Work of Kirk Henriques
Strong Hold, featuring the work of artist Kirk Henriques showed at the Warner Gallery at Millbrook’s Holbrook Arts Center from October 1, 2021 through December 13, 2021. Henriques’ solo show at Millbrook includes eight evocative works in different media, from oil on fiberglass to inkjet prints of varying scales. Anchored by the larger-than-life 2021 oil-on-fiberglass work Walcott portrait (Harold, Carmen, Gloria, Dorothy, Roy, Ceretha, Angela Walcott & Aunt Jess), the eight works on display create an immersive experience, saturated with color, texture, and both motion and stillness. A Brooklyn native of Jamaican descent, Mr. Henriques’ work “investigates power structures embedded in the construction and definition of spatial and temporal narratives.” His work is dense and highly textural and the use of found material and technique of building and scraping produces exuberant, multidimensional work.
Curated by visual art instructor Mollie Flannery, the Warner Gallery offers Millbrook student artists an uncommon opportunity to spend time with the work of a contemporary artist like Mr. Henriques. The ability to revisit the gallery for inspiration and motivation is invaluable.
