Our faculty is committed to participating fully in the development of adolescents as whole people. Faculty members must be committed to one another as colleagues and to the health of the community as a whole.
Millbrook School’s faculty consists of approximately 80 members, most of whom live on campus. Our faculty is diverse in life experience, age, and race/ethnicity. We seek educators who have high energy, passion for the life of the mind, patience, flexibility, a sense of humor, and empathy and optimism towards the issues that our young people face.
A full-time faculty member at Millbrook School embodies the boarding school model known as the “triple threat.” Traditionally, this includes the roles of teacher, coach, and dorm parent. Each role requires energy and commitment to the unique life in a boarding school community. The following outlines most, but not all, of the job a Millbrook School teacher is expected to do.
Teaching: A full-time faculty member will teach four sections per term as assigned by the department head and Dean of Faculty. The average class size is 13 students. Teaching faculty participate in weekly department meetings, collaborate with teachers in and outside of their department, and have a voice in decisions about the curriculum. In addition, faculty members will serve as academic advisor to one to six students per year and be responsible for supervising a community service.
Coaching: Each full-time faculty member is expected to participate in the physical development program during two of the three terms at Millbrook. Most fulfill this responsibility by coaching or assisting interscholastic sports; some supervise recreational sports or “zoo squad”, some direct drama groups.
Residential Life Duties: Many faculty members are housed in dormitory apartments and supervise the boarding students on weeknights and weekends. Each dorm is staffed with at least two resident faculty members, as well as one or two affiliates, who together participate in a supervisory rotation of the students. Others participate in residential life through supervision of evening programs.
