Lucy came to Millbrook as a IVth former from Seol, South Korea, and she’s worked at the zoo from day one. Here are a few of her thoughts on her zoo experience:
1. What’s your favorite animal at the zoo?
“My favorite animals are foxes, but I also think the goats are cute. Our goat Jasmine loves to be petted, so whenever I go, I give food to Jasmine. She's so adorable and she loves to be brushed.”
2. What’s your favorite experience at the zoo?
“We can actually hand feed the red pandas. Their favorite food is apples, and whenever we have apples in their diet, we pick up a few of them and feed them by hand. The Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo is the only place we can experience that.”
3. What have you learned at the zoo?
“I've learned how important it is to observe animals carefully and understand their individual needs. And I’ve also learned that animal care is not just about feeding or cleaning; it’s actually about creating an environment and shelter where they can feel safe and healthy. Also, details are important, because some people just feed and clean their shelter and say, ‘Oh, I'm done with today's task.’ But we should always make sure to catch slight differences, details like how much they eat, how much they defecate, and so on.”
4. What advice do you have for future zoo curators?
“I just want to tell you guys three things: First, close the enclosure door behind you. That's the most important thing. And the second thing is, be on time. Don't make others wait. And not only people but also animals are waiting for you, and they need your help. And third, don't feel ashamed of doing poop scoops, because it's really important. If you guys don't poop scoop, there will be fruit flies, and it will be a disaster.”
