Millbrook at Miss Porter's

Ending our regular season with a bang, the varsity field hockey defeated a fiesty Miss Porters team 2-1. The game certainly started with a bang, as Millbrook's first goal happened a mere 31 seconds into the game (that's got to be a record!) as Ferrari and Anthony got the ball on the center pass to Ascencio who shot, and speedy Anthony was there for the tip in; Ascencio with an assist. That was Miss Porters' wake-up call because they came back with a vengeance and hammered us in our defensive end for the next 15
minutes, earning 4 penalty corners. But they were unable to capitalize thanks in huge part to goalie Morrison who made several key saves. One of her best saves of the season, a shoulder-high blast on the right side she somehow got her glove on, denied MPS an almost certain goal. Millbrook pulled it together in the closing minutes of the first half with a flurry of shots on goal and excellent offensive pressure from Anthony and Ascencio.

Millbrook dominated the second half, our defense providing excellent support to the midfield line. But despite their best efforts, MPS tied the game at
23:05 off a penalty corner. Wanting to avoid yet another overtime, the lady Mustangs played their best hockey of the season with aggressive play in the offensive circle, highlighted by Fracchia's amazing tap in of a superbly executed cross by Ferrari, who made several excellent offensive crosses in the latter part of the game. Fracchia with the goal, Ferrari with the assist. Zublin at left wing had several near misses from her favorite left post position. Anthony had two fast-breaks to keep our hearts beating faster than normal near the end of the half, and had she not been fouled, probably would have scored. Playing very solidly at midfield, Burdis, Villeneuve, Zimnoch and Blundon worked tirelessly to maintain possession, Burdis getting off a zinger of a shot near the end of the game, while defenders Kelly, Roxborough, Small, Ehrenreich and Morrison proved again to be an impenetrable wall. In the closing minutes, Ascencio proved again why she is a stick-work wizard as she personally ate up 45 seconds of clock toying with MPS players who were trying to steal the ball from her. The team played with great intensity and will need to maintain that focus going into the New England Tournament.

Congratulations to the team for a great season, and it's not over yet!
