What a nice win to officially begin our season. The Lady Mustangs overcame first half jitters and a one goal deficit with a solid performance in the second half to defeat a skilled Ethel Walker team 2 to 1. Playing on a wet, slow field with new, very strict NY refs, we fouled ourselves out of the first half. Ethel Walker scored at 17:40, after junior goalie Jane Maglaque made a great first save only to have the rebound sneak past her. But that was the last one, as Maglaque played a super game, making several key strong clears and tallying 6 saves, a great effort on her part. The team turned it around in the second half as junior co-captain Mimi Anthony scored an unassisted goal at 21:37 on a gorgeous penalty corner hit. The lady Mustangs tallied their second goal at 6:45, as freshman Adi Fracchia made a perfect cross in front of goal, off a corner hit, that was deflected in by junior Molly Zimnoch. Fracchia gets an assist on the goal. Vital to the team's success was the leadership of senior co-captain Kaleigh Ferrari who slipped into high gear and was relentless in pushing the ball into our offensive end. We have alot of experience in the back field, manned by seniors Kristina Blundon, Lacy Kelly and Lauren Roxborough; their disciplined, skillful play allowed us to take more chances up field. One defensive highlight -- a goal line save made by freshman defender Tory Small, a clutch save behind the goalie, a sure goal denied. Offensively, senior Jen Ascencio continued to dazzle the crowd with her amazing stickwork and three shots just wide of their mark; wings Alex Fresne and Nell Burdis moved the ball with precision down the sides; senior Isabel Villeneuve played flawless midfield and Allie Ehrenreich and Erin Schroth showed great versatility and commitment to the team by playing wherever they were needed. We missed our sophomores who were at CampJewell, and welcome them back for our upcoming match against the mighty Loomis.
