Millbrook vs. Hotchkiss and Sacred Heart

On Saturday, October 13, 2007, the girls traveled to Hotchkiss (it was both Millbrook's and Hotchkiss's parents weekends) to race the Bearcats and the girls from Sacred Heart.  With the a slight breeze and the temperature hovering around 55 degrees, it was the first good race-day weather of the season.   Hotchkiss has a strong number one runner in Mary Brunelli, with a tough, deep team behind her, and a course that is almost entirely grass, with major hills on miles two and three.  Knowing this, and also that they had a long weekend of good food and rest ahead of them, Millbrook's girls were ready to blow out this race.  They did.  Brunelli went out fast, and co-captain Lucy von Reusner had her in her sites at the first mile mark, coming through at about 5:55 and 6:08 respectively.  The gap had widened somewhat by mile two, with both runners terrifically focused.  Brunelli was determined to break Hotchkiss's course record, which she ended up doing by one second, in 19:27.  Von Reusner took a decisive second in 20:44.  Ema Waldschmidt fought through a side stitch for the entire race and crossed the finish line in a strong fourth place at 21:48.  The next four of Millbrook's racers ran personal records: Celia Manny, placing 6th in 22:47, co-captain Joanna Ehrenreich in 26:56, Eliza Cowen in 27:57, and Arielle Watlington in 28:23.

In the end, the team lost to both Hotchkiss (25-34) and to Sacred Heart (29-30).  Tough losses, but the race was inspiring, and no one could have asked for more from our runners.  Many thanks to all the parents who came to support us: the von Reusners, Waldschmidts, Amy Manny, Ann Watlington, Priscilla Ellsworth, and the Goldsmiths.  We have a great week of training ahead, and we travel with the boys team to race Kent next Saturday.  Stay tuned...
