It’s now officially on its way to becoming Millbrook’s newest and greenest building on campus. As of Friday evening, October 20, MASC (Math And Science Center) became a reality with an indoor, tongue-in-cheek “ground-breaking” ceremony held in the Chelsea Morrison Theater. Witnessed by Millbrook parents and faculty, seniors Julia Heffernan and Ed Haegle brought in the “ground” from the MASC site and delivered it to the proper bucket on the stage. From there, those assembled on stage passed the shovelful of “ground” to Headmaster Drew Casertano and former Science Department Chair Dr. Sis Roberts, who delivered it to the “broken” bucket. The “ground” then “broken,” the ceremony was complete. The shovel-passers were members of COBRAS (Committee to Build a Really Awesome Science Center, an acronym coined by Math Department Chair Todd Feitelson), the group of faculty and students who worked last year with the building’s architect, Voith and Mactavish, to create the program from which the building design was created. The group was co-chaired by Dr. Sis Roberts (former Science Department Chair) and Todd Feitelson; the rest of the committee members included Martha Clizbe (Math Department), Barry Schnoor (Director of the Physical Plant), Dr. Alan Tousignant (Associate Director of the Zoo) and students, Julia and Ed. Unfortunately, Coach Todd Feitelson wasn’t able to be on stage for the ground-breaking because he was with his soccer team, but current Science Department Chair Dr. Barry Rosenbaum represented him well.
As he showed the architects’ renderings of MASC to the parents assembled, Headmaster Drew Casertano commented that the “real value and importance of this building is that it will be our second major step (Holbrook Arts Center was the first) in our providing excellent classrooms and related facilities for our outstanding teachers and their talented and motivated students.” We will all have to be patient until early 2008 when this dream actually takes shape on the lawn west of Holbrook Arts Center.
