Millbrook vs. Cheshire Academy

Millbrook began the game well, setting the tone early and generating a number of solid chances. And while Cheshire’s goalie did well to keep the ball out of the net early in the game, it was only a matter of time before Millbrook would find the back of it. Then at the 23:20 mark, sophomore Emma Thomas crossed a ball to senior Meegan Rourke who scored Millbrook’s first goal. Throughout the first half, Millbrook’s midfielder (Olivia Farrell, Lulu Carter, Meegan Rourke, Hallie Bates, Charlotte Pfeffer, and Emily Collins) did very well to posses and control the ball in the middle third. Likewise, the defense of Charlotte Pink, Marin Rhodin, Robin O’Neill, and Erin Doerrsam managed to keep Cheshire’s counterattack at bay. With keeper Devin Hardy was out of the lineup due to a bruised sternum, Claire Bould stepped in to protect Millbrook’s goal. Claire did an exceptional job as Cheshire had a couple of good opportunities to score, but Bould would not have any of that. The half ended with Millbrook up by one. The second half began much as the first half had ended – good ball possession and developing play. Then at the 29:14 mark, Emma Thomas collected a loose ball and slid it passed the Cheshire keeper to stretch the led by 2. However, soon after that Cheshire netted their first of the game to cut the lead to 1. Two minutes later, Cheshire would score again on a free kick. Then, as it’s been the case all season long with injuries, Claire Bould went down with a dislocated finger (something she apparently did 7 minutes earlier but never realized). Erin Doerrsam then volunteered to jump into the goal. And while she had to make a couple of key saves early, Cheshire managed to slip through the defense and score the game winner at 4:35 in the game. No doubt a very tough loss for the Lady Mustangs. But as their coach commented in the locker room afterwards, he’s not ready to throw in the towel and neither are his players. Next up, Wooster.
