Big Red, Case Hall, Gets Gussied Up

Constructed in 1946, Case Hall was named for Dr. Everett Case, president of Millbrook’s board of trustees from 1959-1968. Dr. Case was also president of Colgate University and the father of two Millbrook graduates, Jim ’53 and John ’62.

While the spirit of the young men living in Case has historically been highly energetic and full of dorm pride (Case won the title of Winter Weekend Champion for 12 straight years), the rooms had been so well lived in over the years that improvements were necessary and important.

Thus, renovations began this summer on the lower level to convert what had been classrooms to new living quarters for students and a faculty dorm parent. Once walls came down, six spacious new rooms were carved out of the lower level footprint to house 11 upper form boys. The showers, which had been converted in the past few years from an open shower room to individual stalls, were also upgraded with the addition of two new stalls. The main level was also freshened up. All rooms and the hallway were painted, floors were replaced, and the large first floor lounge was completely redesigned and furnished.

Case Hall residents over the years have always expressed a great deal of pride in their dorm, and this year that pride is greater than ever!

Some interesting facts about Case Hall:
  • The main lounge was once the dorm smoking pit; it was only just converted to a lounge in the late 1980s.
  • Many long-tenured faculty members began their illustrious careers as dorm parents in Case Hall. This includes Rick McWilliams and Todd Feitelson, both who lived on the 3rd floor of Case when they first came to Millbrook to teach
  • The lower level that now houses student rooms was once the music room, then math classrooms, then humanities classrooms.
  • Some of Case's Winter Weekend victories could be attributed to their immense creativity and willingness to do what had never been done before. Case in point - they built the first and only working hot tub snow sculpture and outdoor shower.
