The Millbrook Varsity Field Hockey team put forth a spirited effort against New England power Williston on a rainy and cold Saturday afternoon. While Williston ended up winning, 5-2, the Mustangs played well and narrowly missed several chances to narrow the scoreline even more. Williston came out strong and scored a couple in the first 10 minutes of the game, but Millbrook got one back on a penalty corner, when Heidi Reiss '16 knocked home a ball from Riley Croghan '18. Williston scored again, but the Mustangs answered a second time on another corner, this time a beautiful shot from Ava Quartararo '18 from the top of the circle off of the injection from Reiss. The score was 3-2 Williston at the half. Williston added a couple more in the first five minutes of the second and looked briefly like they might pull away, but gutsy play from the Mustangs on defense and several near-misses on offense meant the scoring was over. Millbrook actually led in penalty corners, 13-7. Patricia Smith '17 did a nice job in the goal, notching 15 saves (including a penalty stroke). Siena Buffa '16 worked extremely hard in the midfield, as did Jill Koop '16 on defense--though the whole Millbrook team deserves kudos for their hustle. The Mustangs will travel to Canterbury on Wednesday for a big Class C battle.
