Millbrook vs. Suffield
The lady Mustangs will remember this incredible game for years to come. After playing lesser competitors a little flat over the past week, and losing games we probably should have won, the Mustangs tied a team that probably should have decimated us. Suffield Academy is having a great year; they're a talented, fast and focused team. The lady Mustangs played their hearts out Saturday; they proved how tough and gritty they can be, and earned a 2-2 tie. We played one 10 minute OT and the score remained tied. As far as I'm concerned, this is a HUGE victory for the team. Every player gave 110%. It was magical to watch. This was our best game of the season and couldn't have come at a better time.
In the first half, the game went end to end, both teams having potent scoring opportunities. At 16:29, Suffield scored off a penalty corner. The Mustangs ratcheted up the pressure and had multiple scrums in front of goal but just couldn't find the net. The half ended with Millbrook behind 1 goal. In the second half, Millbrook came out strong and earned several quick penalty corners, testament to the forwards and mids excellent offensive pressure in the circle. At 23:23 Ascencio scored on a corner; Ferrari getting the assist. Anthony, Ascencio and Zublin had several pretty breakaways but couldn't quite score but their work paid off when the Suffield goalie fell on the ball, causing a penalty stroke. I never doubted for a second we were about to take the lead because Ascencio NEVER misses her storkes. True to custom, she nailed it. Millbrook was up a remarkable 2-1. Suffield came back hard and earned several penalty corners in the closing minutes and did manage to score. We played one overtime period; the play going end to end in a very exciting match. Neither team would score.
The entire team played beautiful, tough hockey. Special kudos to Villeneuve, Roxborough, and Kelly for playing the best games of their Millbrook careers. Goalie Morrison had 10 saves on the day, a great game. This was the last home game for our seniors and a very memorable one it turned out to be.
