Mustangs & Highlanders Honor Ed Allen

Millbrook’s girls varsity hockey team took on the Frederick Gunn Highlanders on Wednesday afternoon—but it was more than just an early-season meeting between the two squads. This was the Ed Allen Cup game.

Played annually between the Mustangs and their rivals from Gunn, the game honors the memory of Ed Allen, the former Millbrook athletic director and head girls varsity hockey coach. Allen passed away in a tragic accident in 2015. His wife, Emily Allen, a college counselor at Millbrook, attended the game with their young daughters, who were at center ice for the ceremonial puck drop.

The two teams put on quite the show for the fans, most of whom showed up decked out in Millbrook blue to support the home team. Action on the ice went back and forth, and Millbrook finally broke through with a goal from Brooke Ness ’28 with 2:04 remaining in the first period. Gunn wasted no time evening the score less than a minute into the second period, and they added another to take the lead at 3:49, but the Mustangs evened the score a couple of minutes before the second intermission.

A hard-fought third period went down to the wire, but the Highlanders scored two quick goals—one at 3:28 and another at 2:03—to take the lead. Millbrook fought to the final buzzer but was unable to find the back of the net, and for the second-straight year, Millbrook presented Gunn with the Ed Allen Cup.

The Mustangs may not have brought the cup home to where it belongs, but they honored the memory of Mr. Allen by leaving everything on the ice.
