Girls Tennis and Softball Make Deep Playoff Runs

After putting together great regular season performances, Millbrook School’s girls varsity tennis and softball teams made legitimate runs at championships in the playoffs over the weekend. The tennis team rallied its way to the New England Class C semifinals, narrowly missing out on a trip to the finals, while the softball squad powered its way to the New England Class B championship game.

Millbrook hosted its side of the New England tennis bracket. The Mustangs started strong with a quarterfinals win against Westover, winning all four singles matches and leading in their three doubles matches before rain cut them short.

After sweeping Westover, the girls took on St. Luke’s, looking to avenge their loss to the Storm in last year’s semifinals match. The Mustangs gave their all, playing competitive matches across the board, but unfortunately fell short of their goal.

“I was standing with the opposing coach, and we were just marveling at the quality of doubles and how incredibly athletic and gutsy all of our players were,” noted Girls Varsity Tennis Head Coach Trip Powers. “No one lost this match. So, we wish St. Luke's well as they head to the finals again, and I want to thank everybody who came out to watch us play.”

Over on the softball diamond, the WNEPSGSBA Division B No. 2 seeded Mustangs hosted No. 3 Hamden Hall. The game was a back-and-forth affair for the first few innings, as Millbrook took a tight 3-2 lead into the fourth inning. A four-run outburst in the bottom of the fourth put the Mustangs up 7-2, and they ended up winning by a score of 10-2 to punch their ticket to the championship game at Cheshire.

After back-to-back home runs put the Mustangs up 2-0 in the top of the first inning, Cheshire plated five of their own runs in the bottom of the frame and never looked back. Millbrook pulled to within one in the third inning, but Cheshire continued applying offensive pressure to win 14-7.

“Overall, we had a really great team effort today,” said Softball Head Coach Lindsay Peterson after the game. “We will miss our 11 seniors and appreciate all they have given to this program. The coaches are proud of this team and their efforts all season!”

The Mustangs fought hard throughout the year, competing on all 38 of our athletic teams. They’ll be working hard to take the next step and bring championships home to Millbrook when the next academic year rolls around.
