Steve Giannone '05 - Standout in Lacrosse at UVa

A varsity soccer, hockey, and lacrosse player at Millbrook, Steve Giannone was voted the most athletic male graduate by his senior classmates in 2005. In lacrosse he was a three-time All-American and three-time first team all-league player plus offensive player of the year. In hockey he played on the first line for three years and was named an all-league player as a senior. He was also a three-year starter on the soccer team and captain and MVP his senior year.

Today, he continues to shine as an athlete, particularly on the lacrosse field at the University of Virginia where, as a junior, he recently rallied his team to come from behind and beat the North Carolina Tarheels to improve the Virginia Cavaliers record to 10-1 (1-1 in the ACC).

On April 5th, UVa's mens lacrosse team was trailing North Carolina 11-8 with less than three-and-a-half minutes to play. Giannone's first goal of the afternoon was the first of three Virginia goals to bring the game into overtime.

Although they lost the overtime faceoff, the Virginia Cavaliers were patient and looked for the opportunity to score. The winning goal was Steve Giannone's. "With the clock closing in on a minute, [junior Danny] Glading had good position and fired a shot on [Maryland's goalie] Zimmerman. Zimmerman stopped the ball, but it bounced directly to Giannone who found himself all alone on the crease. Giannone calmly snared the free ball and put it past Zimmerman for the winner." (from press releases)

Steve's lacrosse coach has only words of praise for him: "One of the team's best and most versatile athletes, he has been named to the All-ACC Academic men's lacrosse team and the ACC Honor Roll his first two years. He is a dynamic offensive player who has played in every game... 38 ground balls were the most on the team by a non-faceoff midfielder." (UVa mens lacrosse website)
