Part-Time Math & Science Tutor

The primary goal of Millbrook's Colhoun Academic Center is to ensure that each student achieves their full potential. Tutors in the academic center support students in study and organizational skills, serving as role models and providing guidance across all high school subject areas, with special emphasis on science and mathematics—primarily Geometry, Algebra II, Precalculus, Physics, and Chemistry. 
Tutoring Responsibilities:
  • Provide tutoring to Millbrook students on-site in the academic center at Millbrook School
  • Work with students one-on-one
  • Help students with study strategies and techniques
  • Assess students’ progress 
  • Write progress reports to parents and advisors
  • Support the development of subject-relevant skills 
  • Assist students with time management by guiding students in the use of a homework and appointment planning system and teaching them how to break down long-term assignments
  • Participate in tutor training and development sessions and meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge and competence in the subject matter 
  • Willingness to adapt to the Millbrook approach to curriculum delivery
  • Enjoys tutoring the subjects for which services are being provided 
  • Ability to explain concepts to others effectively using a matching strategy to students’ learning styles 
  • Ability to work comfortably with people from diverse backgrounds 
  • Good communication skills with students, teachers, and advisors, and completion of paperwork in a timely manner 
  • Patience and positive attitude in establishing an encouraging learning environment.
Physical and Sensory Requirements (with or without the aid of mechanical devices) 
  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with colleagues.
  • Must be able to operate office, business and accounting machines.
  • If coaching, must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move office equipment, supplies, etc., without restrictions.
  • Must be able to assist in the evacuation of students.

  • Bursts of heavy student congestion and teenage exuberance throughout the day. 
In compliance with the NYS Salary Transparency Law, the annual salary range for this part-time position is $15,000 - $17,000.  The starting salary is based on, but not limited to, several factors, including years of experience, education level, and expertise.
