Mustangs Walk Off With Season Opener

Robb Arndt
The game was a nail biter from the start as both teams failed to score through the first four innings. Trevor Liefer '14 was impressive in his first start of the year, going 5 innings while allowing 7 base-runners on only two hits and striking out 9. Unfortunately, Glen Ridge was able to push across a run in the top of the fifth and Millbrook found themselves down 1-0 with three at bats remaining. The Mustangs threatened to respond in the bottom of the fifth, but Matt Kricheli '15 was cut down at the plate while displaying the aggressive baserunning tendencies on which the Mustangs pride themselves.

Liefer was relieved after the fifth by Zane Acord '15 who pitched scoreless sixth and seventh innings. Millbrook went quietly in the sixth and came up in the bottom of the seventh needing at least one run to prolong the game. Sheldon Freeman '14 led off with a walk and promptly stole second base. He advanced to third on an Evan Williams '14 single. After an intentional walk to Kricheli, Freeman (1-1 with a double and on base in all 3 plate appearances) tied the game on a sacrifice fly to right by 3rd former Jack Quartarao (also responsible for a sac bunt earlier); Williams and Kricheli advanced to third and second respectively on the same play. Glen Ride elected to walk Acord, loading the bases with Gordon Brown-Christenson '14 at the plate. GBC quickly fell down 0-2, but the opposing pitcher, fearful of the powerful Brown-Christenson swing, fired his third pitch to the backstop, plating Williams and ending the game.
