Millbrook Wins Class "C" New England Soccer Championship

Millbrook's boys soccer team came storming out in the Class C New England Championship game against Providence Country Day School and dominated the first 20 minutes of the match. While our play was was awesome, we couldn't quite manage to score. While we generally controlled the ball in the first half, the game ebbed and flowed. Providence had their chances, but neither could they convert.

It was a team effort just before end of the first half that finally earned Millbrook a point on a score inside the box by Peter Fox, assisted by Jason San Antonio. As good as the goal was for Millbrook, so, too, was the save made by Harrison Gostfrand on an off-the-line sure game-tying goal shot by Providence. Harrison's save preserved our half-time lead, 1-0.

In the second half, it was clear that both teams were fatigued from hard games the day before. But Millbrook came through and played a tight defensive game with terrific timely goalkeeping by Chase Cochran who made a couple of key saves with 15 minutes to go in the game. In the last 5-10 minutes of the game, Millbrook settled it down and played smart, tactical defensive soccer, pushing the ball into the offensive corners, maintaining possession and taking away any opportunity for Providence to score.

This is Millbrook's fourth appearance and second win in the New England Championships. We took the championship title in 1997 beating Pingree, 1-0. Millbrook finished 2nd in New England two other times in stiff competition against Beaver Country Day and Providence Country Day. Of important additional note, under the fine leadership of Coach McWilliams, Millbrook has won the WNEPSSA class "C" championship for Western New England and our association for the 11th time in school history and finished 13th out of 47 schools, which includes A,B,C, and D divisions.

2009 was our year! Congratulations to all the members of our boys varsity soccer team, especially our seniors: James Augustine, Chase Cochran, Peter Fox, Alex Harvey, Drew Lane, Dillon Lawson-Johnston, Augie Lehrecke, James Matson, John McCulla, Ned Pierrepont, Will Pierrepont, Jason San Antonio, and Juan Viteri-Yaquian.
