The Millbrook Mustangs hosted Frederick Gunn on Friday afternoon.
After Gunn got on the board in the top of the first inning, Millbrook responded in the bottom of the frame to take the lead. Jazmin Mejia ‘25 started off the inning with a double. Jaicee Downs ‘26 had an RBI hit to score Mejia. Abby Roberson ‘25 had a hit of her own, scoring Downs. Hailey Malmgren ‘25 and Hailey Mesard ‘25 both had solid hits to get on base. Anel Cabrera ‘25 scored Malmgren on an RBI hit, and Neva Gunderson ‘26 singled Mesard in. Millbrook had the lead, 4–2.
In the top of the second inning, Gunn added three more runs to take the lead, 5–4. The Millbrook bats continued connecting in the bottom of the second, but some nice Gunn outfield catches prevented the Mustang runners from scoring.
In the third inning, Mejia took the mound and had two quick strikeouts, shutting down Gunn 1-2-3.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Mustangs had another six-run two-out rally (similar to our one earlier in the week against Kent). Cabrera and Renzi got on base with hits and then scored on a Mejia two-run triple. Downs then scored Mejia, and Roberson followed up with another hit. Downs scored on Malmgren’s RBI, and Roberson and Malmgren scored on Mesard’s RBI hit. Millbrook regained the lead, 10–5.
In the top of the fourth, Gunn plated one more run. In the bottom of the frame, Millbrook added to their lead. Gunderson worked a walk, and Abby Ruggles ‘26 followed with a hit. Gunderson scored on Mejia’s hit. Downs then hit a double to score Ruggles before Roberson’s hit scored Downs. Malmgren got on base with a hit to set the stage for a double from Cabrera to score Roberson.
The Mustang defense then made three quick outs in the top of the fifth, including a nice catch from Malmgren at first.
Shout-outs:
Huge shout-out to Neva Gunderson ‘26 for stepping in as catcher and doing great work behind the plate
Great energy from the entire team to mount the comeback after the early deficit
Every Millbrook player had at least one hit and one run today, and eight batters collected at least one RBI (Mejia and Downs led the way with three RBI apiece)
Downs and Roberson had 4 hits apiece, and Cabrera, Malmgren, and Mejia tallied three hits each
The Mustangs will rest up this weekend before a four-game week, starting with an away game at Hamden Hall on Monday afternoon.
