Girls Varsity Hockey Gathering Steam

With an eye to the postseason, Mustang girls hockey looks to continue their winning ways in the schedule homestretch. Senior team captains Abigail Ainley and Julia Zangre, both VIth formers, are prioritizing team chemistry both on and off the ice. With two VIth formers committed to playing college hockey, Tommi Nash at Curry College and Brysha Schmidt at Manhattanville, there is excellence and experience on every line.

Team success is built on individual performance effort. Caleigh Murphy’s impressive box score includes nine goals, 11 assists (20 points) and Natalia Danyluk is close behind with 11 goals, five assists (16 points). With 13 of their 16 games decided by two goals or less, Morgan Ainley and Jess Trocchio have been solid between the pipes, always keeping the win within reach.

In what is hopefully some playoff foreshadowing, the Mustangs ran the table at the Portsmouth Abbey Holiday Tournament. Beyond that, the scrappy squad has earned the respect and admiration of coaches and players at the mostly larger schools they have faced throughout the season. With beloved head coach Erica (Shapey) Freymann back at the helm, expect the intensity to be taken up a notch. Though the remaining eight games are no cakewalk, momentum is building and the girls are ready to leave it all on the ice every game.
