Millbrook Wins Championship!

The Mustangs traveled back to Pomfret for the league championship game against the undefeated Griffins.  Millbrook was ready to rumble after last week's loss to Pomfret.  Millbrook led at halftime 14-12 in a tough defensive battle.  Then Millbrook scored two unanswered touchdowns and a conversion to lead 28-12 after the 3rd quarter.  In the 4th quarter, Pomfret scored twice, with the 2nd score with 0:24 left in the game to bring the score to 28-26.  However, Millbrook stopped the conversion, securing their first win against Pomfret and their first championship in the Mustang's 6-year football history.
Millbrook returned to undefeated Pomfret to play in the league championship game.   The Mustangs were ready to take on the challenge especially after the previous week's loss in the regular-season final against Pomfret.

Pomfret scored first early in the 2nd quarter on a short touchdown run with no conversion.  On the following Millbrook possession, WR Matt Sardo scored on a 30-yard touchdown run with 10:16 left in the 2nd quarter.  A successful 2-point conversion was made on a pass reception by SB Ethan Kessler to give the Mustangs the lead.  The Griffins scored next on a 10-yard touchdown run with no conversion at 7:43 remaining in the 2nd quarter.  On the ensuing Millbrook possession, SB Ethan Kessler scored on an exciting 55-yard touchdown reception with 7:03 remaining in the 2nd quarter.  The Mustangs were not able to convert but took the lead for the rest of the game. The score at halftime was Millbrook 14, Pomfret 12.

At 6:25 remaining in the 3rd quarter, Millbrook scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass to WR Matt Sardo.   At 2:14 remaining in the 3rd quarter, QB Mac Elliott scored on a 4-yard touchdown run with a successful 2-point conversion by SB Ethan Kessler on a pass reception. This brought the score at the end of the 3rd quarter to Millbrook 28, Pomfret 12.

However, Pomfret was not done scoring.   At 11:12 remaining in the 4th quarter, Pomfret scored on a 5-yard touchdown run with a successful run conversion to bring the Griffins to within 8 points.   The teams battled back and forth throughout the 4th quarter, but Pomfret scored on a "Hail Mary" 40-yard touchdown pass to bring them within 2 points of the Mustangs.   The energized Mustangs stopped the conversion and were able to run the clock out securing their first league championship and first win over Pomfret in its 6-season history.  Final score:  Millbrook 28, Pomfret 26.

The Mustang defense made many tackles in keeping the Griffins at bay.  Tackling leaders were LB Ethan Kessler with 11.5 tackles, CB Ashton Colangelo with 9 tackles, LB Jaylen Thatcher with 7 tackles.  Other Millbrook tacklers were LB Davis Chader (4), CB Eli Crystal (3), SS Mac Elliott (3),  LB Rocco Boland (3), LB Nolan Cadieux (2.5), FS Matt Sardo (2), CB James Deng (2), K Thomas Kruijtzer (1). 

LB Ethan Kessler had one fumble recovery and one interception.

Millbrook's offense was led in rushing by WR Matt Sardo with 51 yards and Mac Elliott with 38 yards.  Other rushers were RB Jaylen Thatcher with 22 yards, SB Ethan Kessler 12 yards, and RB Rocco Boland with 8 yards.  Pass reception leaders were SB Ethan Kessler (71 yards) and WR Matt Sardo (60 yards).  Other receivers were RB Rocco Boland (13 yards), and TE James Deng (10 yards).   Ashton Colangelo had 18 yards of kickoff returns.

Congratulations to the Mustang football team for its first league championship and first win over Pomfret in its 6 season history!!  The team also gives thanks to the players and coaches from previous seasons for paving the way to this win.  The team also appreciates and honors the efforts of the late Mr. Edward Allen (jersey #1) who revived the Millbrook football program from nearly a 40-year hiatus starting in 2016.
