Road nailbiter ends with first loss

Coach Powers
On the best day of the spring so far, we travelled to Canterbury.  I want especially thank Mikayla Vitiello who came up to Varsity today because we were so shorthanded.  With girls playing out of position, we gave it our all today, and that is all you can ask.

The first to finish was Captain Lilla Powers who methodically worked point after point to earn the 8-1 win, continuing her undefeated season.  The other singles proved more difficult.  Playing #2 for the first time this year, Lilly Charlson was up against a tireless opponent who seemed to make few mistakes.  Lilly battled though, changing tactics and turned the tide for a bit, but time ran out on the comeback as she lost 4-8.  Also playing in a new spot was Shea Sevin at #3.  Shea had her game working pretty well but her opponent also hung in there, kept the ball in play, and handed Shea the loss.  Captain Natalie Whitman has been playing as well as anyone recently and played #4 today.  Despite her deep heavy groundstrokes, she couldn’t find the formula against another super consistent foe.  I applaud these girls who were playing four or more spots up the ladder and hung in there and battled to the end as all of them took the game after their opponent got to 7!

The doubles were very exciting.  The aforementioned Mikayla partnered with Julianna Liptak at #3.  After trading the first 8 games, the young duo started to pounce at net and ripped off the next 4 games to secure the 8-4 win.  #2 of Margaret Boeschenstein and Paeten Parker had a hard time getting going, falling behind 1-6 as the Canterbury strategy had them scratching their collective heads.  But they mounted a furious comeback, never gave up, but with little margin for error they eventually lost a heart-breaker 6-8.  All eyes turned to #1 doubles of Phebe Fisher and Charlotte Davis.  This was truly a back and forth affair as I don’t think any team ever had more than a 1 game lead.  It obviously ended in a tie breaker and the Millbrook pair played some exceptional points, coming away with the 8-7(3) victory.

While we are certainly disappointed to have our first loss of the season, I am so proud of how we compete every day.  We will again switch up the lineup tomorrow as we host Canterbury at 2pm.  Come cheer us on!
