Assistant Dean of Students & Dean of Residential Life

Millbrook School seeks an assistant dean of students and dean of residential life to begin in August 2024. This position will report to the dean of students and is directly responsible for residential life programming as well as initiatives designed to promote students' social and personal development. Included will be other specific responsibilities including teaching one section, coaching or other afternoon program involvement for two out of three seasons, residential life duty, and student advising. The ideal candidate will be collaborative and excited to work with young people, will possess strong organizational and communication skills, as well as a good sense of humor, and will have demonstrated a commitment to equity and inclusivity.
Residential Life Responsibilities 
  • Supervise and execute all aspects of Millbrook’s Residential Life program, including but not limited to:
    • Manage all dorm heads and meet with them regularly 
    • Convene dorm head meetings and build agenda alongside the dean of students
    • Oversee Residential Life Workshop for new faculty during opening meetings
    • Oversee dorm leader selection process in conjunction with the dean of students and dean of student engagement and wellbeing
    • Facilitate leadership programming for the dorm leader group
    • Manage housing process and assignments 
    • Liaise with the physical plant department regarding dormitory needs
  • Serve on a dorm team - one evening per week and one weekend a month (or equivalent)
Student Life Office Responsibilities
  • Work alongside the dean of students in all capacities 
  • Manage major and minor discipline cases alongside the dean of students 
  • Attend major weekend activities 
  • Act as a liaison between school and families for student issues
  • Serve on the following committees/meetings:
    • Core Health 
    • Student Life team meetings 
  • Support the coordination of the opening and closing of school, as well as any departures and returns throughout the school year
  • Partner with the student activities/daily operations coordinator on all things involving Orah, our student management platform
  • Oversee student cars on campus and the day student overnight program
  • Support the student activities/daily operations coordinator with the weekend activity program
  • Attendance management
  • Work in conjunction with the Academic Office, dean of students, and dean of student engagement and wellbeing to support the school's advisory program
Additional Responsibilities
  • Teach one section or the equivalent
  • Coach two seasons or the equivalent
  • Serve as an advisor 
Qualifications 
  • Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred. 
  • Experience working in a residential setting.
  • Coaching and/or playing interscholastic sports preferred. 
  • Must be able to work collegially and be facile with technology.
  • Must be committed to working with young people in a diverse community and be able to communicate with a diverse population.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
The salary range for this position is $45,000-$65,000.  When determining placement in the salary range, Millbrook School considers total experience, number of years working at Millbrook School, and other factors permitted by law.

PHYSICAL & SENSORY REQUIREMENTS (with or without the aid of a mechanic device)
  • Must function independently and be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language in an understandable manner.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Must be able to work in person, on campus.
  • Must be flexible and willing to adapt to new technology, teaching methods, and/or schedules.
  • Must be able to physically teach, coach, advise, attend meetings, and be an active member of residential life. 
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move equipment, supplies, etc., without restrictions.
  • If coaching, must be willing & able to travel & attend sporting events on nights and weekends.
  • Faculty members must be able to operate a motor vehicle.  
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Typical office and classroom conditions.
  • Involved in residential life in the dining hall, chapel, and dorms.
  • Outdoor weather and/or indoor conditions while coaching.
  • Bursts of heavy traffic, congestion, and teenage exuberance throughout the day.
