Elaine Lifter is an award-winning actress, writer, and director who has shared her craft with students for over 25 years. Under her direction, the Millbrook
Theater Department has flourished, putting on multiple encore-worthy productions each school year and welcoming theater industry experts (
Neil LaBute,
William Sadler, and more) to inspire and guide students.
Holding a master’s in educational theater from New York University, Elaine had a successful stage career before becoming an educator. She toured with the Young Americans Theater Company, co-founded Heartbeat Theatre Company, and worked in theaters including Kraine Theater, Theater for the New City, One Dream Theater, and Jean Cocteau Theater. After teaching at various schools and theater companies/festivals, she has been a fixture at Millbrook for 15 years.
She believes that theater is a unifying art form that holds space for everyone. Her goal is to help Millbrook students find their creative outlet in the theater, whether on stage as an actor or behind the scenes in the production team.
