Matthew's career began as a customer service rep answering calls in a garage in Palo Alto in 1996. Then, an engineer dropped a UNIX machine on his desk and told him to figure it out. Fifteen years later he left as a senior software engineer before becoming a designer. None of this was really planned.

Since 2015, he has worked for the federal government. He was on the team that rebuilt www.coronavirus.gov in 24 hours and on the team that got $46 billion in emergency rental assistance out to people about to lose their homes. Today, he works on the VA.gov website, so veterans and their families get the benefits they've earned.

In his Alumni Summit session, he will ask you to design something. Then he will ask for the same thing a different way, and you'll see how much of your answer was coming from the question. He has watched a lot of money and a lot of years go into solving problems nobody had. He hopes to spend the rest of the session talking about how to avoid that: finding the real cause underneath a problem you all share, and testing an idea before anyone builds it.
