Hailing from Beijing, China, Charley has been working at the zoo since his IIIrd form year. He shares these insights about being a zoo curator:
1. What's your favorite animal at the zoo?
“My favorite animals at the zoo are the kinkajous. They live in the tropical building at the zoo, and they are especially cute while eating fruits and veggies. I think their ability to hang by their tails is super cool.”
2. What's been your favorite experience at the zoo?
“My favorite experience at the zoo is taking care of the guanacos. It is an especially complex process, and they were smelling me and getting close me during the curator training session. Although sometimes we need to bear with the risk of getting spit on, they are really cute animals!”
3. What have you learned from working at the zoo?
“I have learned to be careful and meticulous. Working at the zoo requires us to be highly cautious, and we try to avoid any mistakes if possible. This lesson applies to working at the zoo, but it’s also one we will find useful later in life.”
4. What advice do you have for future zoo curators?
“I would suggest that future curators take time to appreciate the experience of working in the zoo, as it is not a common experience. If there's something you're passionate about, just go talk to the zoo staff, and I believe together we will make the zoo an even better place!”
