Katherine came to Millbrook from Denver, Colorado. She worked at the zoo for one semester as a Vth former, and she also has experience working at the Denver Zoo. She shares this about her time at the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo:
1. What's your favorite animal at the zoo?
“My favorite animals at the zoo are definitely the ferrets. They can be very annoying sometimes, but they are just the cutest little creatures and they are very social and sweet. Seeing how they not only interact with each other but also humans is so cool.”
2. What's been your favorite experience at the zoo?
"My favorite experience at the zoo so far has probably been just walking around on a Sunday morning when no one is there. It’s such a good time to really embrace the zoo from a different perspective and see what it’s like while I’m not working. It’s given me the opportunity to learn the names of a bunch of animals and also discover new ones that I didn't even know we had.”
3. What have you learned from working at the zoo?
“Something that I have learned from the zoo is that it takes a lot to take care of all of these animals. Each of them has such specific needs at different times, and if those needs aren't met, it can be very bad. I have also learned a lot about leadership and how to manage my zooies and work with other curators. It has definitely been an opportunity for me to step outside my comfort zone.”
4. What advice do you have for future zoo curators?
“My advice for future zoo curators is to be patient. Managing zooies and making sure that the animals are being kept safe while you are working with them can get stressful, but the most important thing is to make sure that the animals’ priorities are met. You don't want to jeopardize that by being in a rush or getting into an argument with your zooies.”
