The Millbrook Varsity Field Hockey team earned its first victory of the season with an exciting 2-0 win over Berkshire. The Mustangs came out firing from the opening whistle, earning penalty corners and taking shot after shot on goal. Despite the early intensity, however, it was not until the 5:10 mark that Millbrook was finally able to find the back of the cage. Midfielder Kayla Schmalz '14 put herself in perfect position to collect a rebound off the Berkshire keeper's pads and knocked it home to put the Mustangs up, 1-0. Kayla's sister, Maddie '13, got the second goal started by taking the ball down the right side and feeding it to Amelia Woods '13 on the right wing. Woods deftly brought the ball to the post, pulled the keeper over, and then fed a perfect pass to a cutting Heather Neuburger '13, who knocked it into the goal five and a half minutes into the second half. The Bears had several chances to score goals of their own, but positively stellar play from Millbrook keeper BooBoo Fuscone '12 kept Berkshire scoreless. The Bears even earned a penalty stroke in the second half, but couldn't get much power on the shot, and Fuscone easily turned it away to preserve her first career shutout. The Millbrook defense of Caroline Whalen '14, Georgia Wright '13, Eleanor Sednaoui '13, and Co-Captain Eliza Chapman '12 were rock-solid throughout. All in all, it was an excellent team effort and a nice way to earn our first win of the season.
