Millbrook Drops Close One to Westminster, 1-2

The Millbrook Varsity Softball Team fell to Westminster, 1-2, on Saturday afternoon in Millbrook. The Mustangs played quite well against Westminster, the two-time defending Class A Western New England Champions, and the game went down to the wire. Meg Ahern '13 threw the whole contest for Millbrook, and she pitched a gem. Ahern allowed just one earned run on five hits, striking out 10. The Mustangs scored their only run in the first inning. Melissa Rome '11 led off with a nice single up the middle, and Amber Koenigsberger '13 moved her to second with a great sacrifice bunt. Rome was thrown out at third on a dropped third strike, but that enabled Tori Trovato '12 to reach first base. Ahern then scored Trovato with an RBI double, putting the Mustangs up, 1-0. However, Westminster was able to claw its way back into the game, first with a run in the third and then the game-winner in the sixth, and made some nice defensive plays to keep Millbrook from scoring again. Several Mustangs also had some great defensive plays, notably Trovato, who dirtied up her uniform by diving all over the field to make catches and gun out runners. Chloe Gbai '12 made a couple of nice grabs in right field, and first baseman Melissa Sheeran '14 made a good play on two different foul ball pop-ups. Overall, the Mustangs put forth a solid effort against a talented opponent.
