Millbrook Gets 11-0 Win over Westover in Season Opener
The Millbrook softball team opened up its season with a solid 11-0 win over Westover on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Meg Ahern '13 earned the shutout victory, notching 11 strikeouts to three walks and allowing only four hits. Her batterymate, Tori Trovato '12, had a nice game behind the plate in the first appearance of her Millbrook career. Offensively, the Mustangs got off to a great start, as each of the first five batters reached base safely. Co-captain Melissa Rome '11 led off with a double, followed by Amber Koenigsberger's ('13) single and a walk to Trovato. Ahern hit a pretty line drive double to bring all three runners in, followed by Melissa Sheeran's ('14) RBI single. The Mustangs also added four runs in the third inning, with Koenigsberger, Trovato, Ahern, and Sheeran all scoring. Ahern led the way with five RBI, while Sheeran had three and co-captain Nell Gridley '11 notched two. Bria Horsley '14 ended Millbrook's scoring in the sixth when, after reaching base on a fielder's choice, she scored on a Sheeran base hit. The Mustangs made some nice defensive plays as well, as Chloe Gbai '12 caught two fly balls in right, Sheeran made a neat grab on a hard liner to first, Koenigsberger made a diving grab of an infield looper, and Trovato gunned out a runner at second. All in all, it was a nice start to the season for Millbrook.
