Millbrook vs. Kent

Greg Murphy

The Millbrook Mustangs tilted with the Kent School this afternoon in a New England showdown of neighboring schools. Kent connected on the first goal of the game and throughout the first few minutes of the game it looked like it was going to be a back and forth game all afternoon. At the end of the first quarter, the score was knotted up at four.

It was in the second quarter that the Mustangs ignited for eight goals to Kent’s one to take a 12-5 lead into the half. Will Benjamin 09, Nick Weaver 07 and Taylor Vitt 07 all connected on crucial goals in the first half to set the tone for the rest of team, but it was the excellent execution by attacking Forrest Mas 07, Beau Parent 08 and Mackey Haller 07 that opened the scoring frenzy with excellent ball control and feeding.

The third quarter would prove to be the Mustangs weakest quarter. Each team struggled with ground balls in the quarter, but Kent possessed the ball and connected on four goals to close the gap to 14-9. After making some adjustments, the boys stepped on to the field determined to make-up for the undisciplined play in the third quarter. The defense shutout the Kent Lions in the fourth quarter with tenacious defense by Dan Mascoveta 07, Ryan Fanning 07, Nick Farrell 08 and Zack Fuller 09. Between the pipes, third former, Chris Bennett came to life and stopped two very important shots to give the team the edge that they needed to bring the win home.

On face offs, Will Benjamin 09, Lynn Harrington 08 and Zack Vitt 08 took 16 out of 26 face-offs to give the Mustangs the time of possession that we needed. It was a well played game by the Millbrook team. The Mustangs take the field again this Saturday, when they host Cheshire Academy in a 2:00PM game. A special thanks goes out to the Bailly family, parents of fifth former Sam Bailly for this afternoon’s tailgate.
