Big news, and it's only getting started! We're thrilled that our new 7-acre solar field is now online, and it is the largest producing solar field in Central Hudson's service area!
We are now purchasing electricity produced by the system. The first year that is expected to be around 2.1 million kilowatt hours. We currently use just under 2 million kilowatt hours to power the entire campus.
Millbrook students and faculty are committed to lowering our carbon footprint and, in fact, to becoming completely carbon neutral. This solar field will help us move closer to that goal. As we work to lower our electricity usage, we will be, in effect, returning more power to the grid.
The entire school community will be celebrating the “launch” of the new solar field on April 23rd. That day will be our Earth Day celebration, which traditionally includes an all-school roadside cleanup, an all-school forum related to sustainability, and an Earth Day Picnic. This year we will also gather as a school at the solar field for a brief presentation and celebration, which will kick off extended activities that support the ways in which Millbrook is truly POWERFUL.
Stay tuned for much more information, including how the solar field is already being woven into the curriculum across science courses, independent studies, and CES (Culminating Experience for Seniors) projects.
