Millbrook loses its first match of the year

Coach Powers
I am very happy with the way the girls dealt with adversity today.  Everyone, except #3 doubles, was playing out of position, and they all made their school and coach proud.  First, we only had eight players make the trip to play a different format than we are used to.  No ad games proved difficult.  Starting with the doubles and with overlap allowed, Sophia Hartman '16 and Captain Eleanor Sednaoui '13, who had played together once in practice, fell behind quickly but then traded games until finally succumbing 8-3.  Heidi Reiss '16 and Julia Freund '16 played together for the first time as well, forced two match points, but eventually lost 9-7.  This match witnessed some of the finest doubles I have seen all year.  Skye Moir '13 and Storey Schifter '13 forced many deuces but were on the losing end of too many of those do-or-die points.  A bright spot was at #4 doubles where Sayre Reimer '16 and Iona Moir '14, also playing together for the first time, won a hard fought match.

The singles started with #1 Sophia Hartman '16 facing off against the big heavy topspin forehand of her Westminster opponent.  Again, those watching would be surprised at the score of 6-1, 6-2 as the match seemed closer.  Eleanor Sednaoui moved to #2 and fought hard before losing to a quality opponent 6-4, 6-2.  Julia Freund played an exhibition singles match and won 6-3.  The matches of the day were played by the Moir sisters.  Skye lost a heart breaking first set tiebreaker and eventually the match.  Iona lost her first set 6-4, but made some nice adjustment to win the second set 6-1.  This forced a super tiebreaker for the match which Iona pulled out 10-7.

We are hoping everyone gets back and is healthy for our next match at Taft on Wednesday!
