Millbrook Art History Class Visits Gordon Parks Collection
For the second year, Millbrook School has teamed up with an artist's foundation to offer its art history students an educationally unique class experience.
The class focuses on an individual artist, their medium, and their cultural relevance. Each year, the class culminates with an exhibit, in conjunction with the foundation, of the artist's work. Thanks to the enthusiasm and generosity of the Gordon Parks Foundation, art history students have the opportunity to discover the multi-talented Gordon Parks and to work closely with some of the most iconic photographs of the twentieth century. Gordon Parks was a long time photographer for Life Magazine. Parks, the magazine's first African-American staff photographer, was also a composer, choreographer, musician, director, author, painter, and poet.
On the morning of October 4th, the Gordon Parks Art History class boarded two Millbrook School buses and drove the hour and a half to the SUNY Purchase campus where the Meserve-Kunhardt Foundation houses its archives. The class was welcomed by Peter Kunhardt Jr. '01, head of the Meserve-Kunhardt Foundation, Linda Badami, head archivist, and James Jordan, associate archivist. During the tour of the archives, the class observed the extensive collection of Civil War and Abraham Lincoln photographs, as well as the Ed Clark collection and a collection of Pat the Bunny, the well-known and beloved children's book.
In the afternoon, the class began to view the Gordon Parks Foundation's archives of reference prints. Students began the process of selecting a series of images for the year end exhibit. The selection of prints and resulting discussions are all parts of the overall exhibit process. Students will continue to ponder the nature of the class and their role in promoting, preparing, and curating an exhibit of Gordon Parks' photographs. The students will serve as docents for the show when it opens and be responsible for leading tours, engaging with visitors, and perpetuating Gordon Parks' legacy.
The students, teachers, and entire Millbrook community eagerly await the spring show, which will be open to the public.
