Poet Brian Turner Visits Millbrook

Joan Binzen
Brian Turner, a poet whose unusual history as both a veteran of the wars in Bosnia and in Iraq and the holder of an MFA in poetry, was in residence at Millbrook School for two days, February 20-21.

Friday afternoon, at a workshop in the Library, Mr. Turner led a small group of student-poets and faculty in writing a group poem in the classical form of an ode. The poem will one day be published with all the students’ names listed as co-writers, but you can read the poem now by clicking here.

At the Forum Friday night Mr. Turner set a personal and relaxed tone that marked his entire visit. After looking directly into the audience, he asked: “How are you tonight?”, then proceeded to read poems selected from Here Bullet, his prize-winning collection of searing poems written in and about Iraq. Mr. Turner kept up a patter between poems, sometimes questioning the meaning of what he had written, sometimes encouraging us to think further about them. When the reading ended, there was time for the many questions asked by students and faculty, some curious, and most serious and thoughtful.

While here, Mr. Turner told Mr. Casertano and several others how much he liked the school--the best of all the many he has visited. The spirit of his visit is perhaps expressed in the words with which he signed the Flagler Library’s copy of his book:

To all who read this – I offer my very best to all you do and to all you care for
