Millbrook Student Earns Competitive Student Challenge Award

Millbrook V former Lucy Von Reusner has been awarded a scholarship to the Student Challenge Awards Program, a very competitive research program that selects highly capable and motivated students to join ecological and scientific projects for 2-3 weeks every summer throughout the U.S.

The Earthwatch Institute implements this program which is funded by outside donors:

The Student Challenge Awards Program (SCAP) offers students aged 16-18 gifted in the arts and humanities an opportunity to spend two to three intensive weeks during the summer at a scientific research station. The aim is to excite the students' imagination, expand their potential, and stimulate their curiosity about science and technology. SCAP is a competitive fellowship program that rewards creative thinkers and risk takers.

Research focuses on the natural sciences and ranges from astronomy to microbiology. Most projects involve field and laboratory research, and students are exposed to the latest technology and innovative research equipment while:

 • Participating in hands-on scientific research alongside professionals
 • Learning how science and technology advance our understanding of the world
 • Traveling to a different geographical area
 • Getting to know a talented group of peers and scientific mentors

Award receiptients are assigned to a variety of research teams, with 7-10 students per team. Lucy will be joining an ecological research project along the upper Mississippi River this summer, becoming the fourth Millbrook student to participate in Earthwatch's summer scholarship program. Garrett Meigs '00, Ava Goodale '01, and Ashley Casale '06 studied pikas and climate change in the Eastern Sierras of California, lizard ecology in Arizona, and coral reef ecology in the U.S. Virgin Islands respectively.

Congratulations to Lucy, and we look forward to learning more details about her scientific research expedition.
