Millbrook Beats Berkshire, 11-10, in Final At Bat

The Millbrook Softball team extended its winning ways on Wednesday afternoon with a thrilling 11-10 win over Berkshire. With the game knotted up at 10-10 heading into the bottom of the 7th, Tori Trovato '12 lined a two-out single to bring home Melissa Rome '11 for the win. Megan Ahern '13 improved to 4-0 for the year, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits. Ahern struck out 13 and walked three. Millbrook played well offensively the whole game. After holding Berkshire scoreless in the top of the first, Millbrook did a beautiful job manufacturing a run in the bottom of the inning. Rome led off with a walk, Amber Koenigsberger '14 laid down a nice little sacrifice bunt to move her to second, and Trovato sent a long fly ball to right so Rome could tag up and move to third. Ahern brought her home with an RBI single, and the Mustangs were off and running. The game was a wild one after that. Millbrook had some great offensive performances (an RBI triple from Trovato in the third, a two RBI double from Melissa Sheeran '14 in the fifth) but made several defensive miscues that let Berkshire take control of the game. Heading into the bottom of the penultimate inning, Millbrook was down, 9-5, but the team showed its level of grit and heart and refused to give up. Chloe Gbai '12 led off the sixth with a heads-up play, getting to first on a dropped third strike. Rome continued her excellent day with an RBI double, followed up by a Koenigsberger single. Ahern then launched a two-RBI double, Sheeran walked, and Nell Gridley scored both of them with a clutch single to put Millbrook ahead, 10-9. The Mustangs let Berkshire tie up the game in the top of the 7th, but Millbrook was not done yet, as Trovato's hit won the game and set off some raucous cheering from the team and the Millbrook faithful. It was an excellent comeback win for the Mustangs and a nice way to head into Friday's game against Canterbury.
