Millbrook vs. Hyde School

Parents Weekend at Millbrook made for the perfect setting for a lacrosse game. The Millbrook Mustangs, coming off a disappointing loss to Brunswick on Wednesday rebounded with a strong team performance to hand visiting Hyde School their first loss of the early season.

To open, Will Benjamin 09’ won the first of several face off’s against a very strong Hyde opponent. It took Millbrook two minutes into the first quarter before they tallied their first goal of the day when Forrest Mas collected his first of three goals off of a feed from fellow classmate and senior captain, Nick Weaver. Mas again tickled the twine when he received a very nice pass from Mackey Haller 07’ at the 9:10 mark to put the Mustangs up by two. Hyde scored the next goal and put the visiting team right back in it. The momentum would be brief however, as Will Benjamin 09’ added to his face off success by netting his first of two goals in the first quarter off of a look by Taylor Vitt 07’. Soon after, Mackey Haller got into the goal column with a great time and room shot off a pass from line mate Beau Parent 08’. It would be another Benjamin-from-Vitt hook-up to end the half with the home team up by a score of 5-1.

In the second quarter, Lynn Harrington 08’ and Zack Vitt 08’ got into the face off mix to keep the pressure on Hyde’s FOGO to help Will Benjamin 09’ take 15 of 21 face offs for the afternoon. Millbrook found the net five times in the second quarter to take a 10-3 score into the half. The scoring in the second quarter was spread out with Forest Mas 07’, Will Benjamin 09’, Nick Weaver 07’ Beau Parent 08’ and Zack Vitt 08’ collecting goals.

In the third quarter the defense would step up their game and blank Hyde for the entire quarter. Great play was had by several defenseman, Dan Mascoveta 07’, Nick Farrell 08’, Will Gray 07’, Zack Fuller 09’ and Kyle Mills 08’. In goal, Chris Bennett rejected 17 shots to pace the defense. Nick Weaver 07’ found the cage in the third quarter from Will Benjamin for the lone goal for Millbrook. With a convincing lead Millbrook was able to keep the tempo high to finish the game strong. In the fourth quarter Sam Augustine 08’ scored his first goal of the day on a great dodge and shot play, and Jake Schmidlapp 08’ rounded out the scoring with a great cut and catch off a feed from fellow classmate Sam Bailiy.

The game ended with the traditional handshake followed by a great tailgate by Ms. Cynthia Gray. The large crowd and cool spring weather made the win a great way to head into the long weekend. The Mustangs will play host to DII opponent Suffield Academy next Saturday, May 5th with a 3:30 PM start.
