Come-from-Behind Win on Senior Day Earns Millbrook Playoff Spot
L Peterson
The Millbrook Mustangs hosted Canterbury on Wednesday afternoon for Senior Day. The weather looked like it might not cooperate, but our field was ready for a little water, and after warming up in some rain, the weather held for most of the game.
After spotting Canterbury an early 4-0 lead, the Mustangs stayed locked in.
In the top of the third inning, Millbrook had a quick 1-2-3 inning.
In the bottom of the third inning, Jazmin Mejia ‘25 hit a solo home run to get Millbrook on the board. Jaicee Downs ‘26 then had a solid hit that she legged out into a double with good base running. Downs then found her way to third and home also on heads-up base running. Millbrook had cut the Canterbury lead to 4-2 coming out of the third inning. Millbrook again had a quick 1-2-3 inning, this one lasting only seven pitches.
Millbrook had an exciting two-out, four-run rally in the bottom of the fifth. Mejia got things started with a single, followed by Downs getting on with a hit as well. With two runners on in scoring position, Abby Roberson ‘26 had a two-RBI hit. Haley Malmgren kept the hitting going. Again, two runners were on for another Abby—Abby Hylan ‘25. She then hit a two-RBI shot. Millbrook led 6-4 going into the sixth inning.
The Mustangs then played tight defense in the sixth inning to get key outs at the top of Canterbury’s batting order. In the top of the seventh inning, after getting two quick outs, Canterbury got the next two runners on base. Mejia shut things down with a strikeout to end the game.
Millbrook and Canterbury were battling for a playoff spot heading into this game. With the win, the Mustangs secured the No. 2 seed for the Division B Western New England softball playoffs. We look to host No. 3 seed Hamden Hall on Saturday.
