The No. 2 Millbrook Mustangs hosted No. 3 Hamden Hall for the WNEPSGSBA Division B Semifinals. It looked like the rain was going to pass by—then, after some heavy rain during the latter part of warmups, the sun came back out, and it was beautiful softball weather.
Hamden Hall loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first inning. Stella Renzi ‘26 then had an amazing double play at third base—she caught a rocket of a line drive and then tagged third before the runner could return. This play was a total momentum changer early in the game, as Millbrook got the next out quickly and shut down a big Hamden Hall opportunity.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Mustangs went up 2-0. Jazmin Mejia ‘25 walked to start off the game, followed by Haley Malmgren ‘25 notching a two-out hit. That put two runners on for Abby Hylan ‘25 to have a nice two-RBI hit.
In the top of the second inning, Hamden Hall got a run in to narrow the Millbrook lead to 2-1. Millbrook had a few more great defensive plays—first Mejia on a heads-up play to catch the runner from third in a pickle, and then Renzi fielding another line-drive rocket at third.
The third inning saw Hamden Hall tie it up 2-2 before Millbrook got the run back to regain the lead 3-2. Mejia walked, and Jaicee Downs ‘25 hit a double to move Mejia to third base before she scored.
In the top of the fourth, Millbrook had a quick 1-2-3 before putting together a nice four-run rally to add to their lead. Hailey Mesard ‘25 and Neva Gunderson ‘26 had back-to-back hits to get things started, followed by a nice bunt from Renzi. In a nice first-and-third play, Gunderson scored. Another walk for Mejia and another hit from Downs set the stage for an Abby Roberson ‘26 two-RBI hit. Malmgren continued the hitting, scoring Downs. Millbrook led 7-2.
The top of the fifth inning had another quick set of outs defensively for Millbrook. The Mustangs then added three more runs to their total in the bottom of the 5th inning. Arhi Fernandes ‘25 got on base on a hit, followed by Mejia getting on base on another walk. Downs had a great two-RBI double to score Fernandes and Mejia. Roberson then had a sac fly to score Downs. Millbrook led 10-2.
The top of the sixth inning saw another quick set of outs. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Mesard and Podgursky both had great contact, on which Hamden Hall made some nice plays to rob them of hits. In the top of the seventh, Millbrook had sharp defense to make the plays and secure the win.
Offensive Highlights:
- Downs went 3-for-4 (including 2 doubles) with 2 runs
- Roberson went 2-for-4 with an RBI
- Malmgren went 2-for-2 with an RBI
- Hylan went 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs
- Mejia had 4 runs, scoring on each intentional walk
