On a very cold and blustery Wednesday afternoon, the Millbrook Mustangs traveled to Kent. We were excited for the rematch—we first played Kent in a pre-season scrimmage after only three days of practice and were blanked 8–0. Today was a very different outcome! Get ready for a long write-up with lots of excitement.
The first inning saw great outfield catches from Hailey Mesard ‘25 and Arhi Fernandes ‘25.
The score was tied 0–0 heading into the bottom of the 2nd inning, when Kent capitalized on a pair of Millbrook defensive miscues to plate six unearned runs.
The Mustangs responded in the top of the third inning in an exciting fashion, plating eight runs to take an 8–6 lead. The inning started with Jaicee Downs ‘26 and Abby Roberson ‘26 getting on base to set the stage for a Haley Malmgren ‘25 two-RBI hit. The Mustangs then started a two-out rally that would score six more runs. Mesard doubled to score Malmgren. Fernandes then added her own single before Stella Renzi ‘26 and Neva Gunderson ‘26 both worked walks (with Gunderson’s walk scoring Mesard). The bases were then loaded for Jazmin Mejia ‘25 to hit a bases-clearing three-RBI triple. Downs then came to the plate again, adding an RBI single to score Mejia.
In the bottom of the third, Millbrook got two quick outs, after Downs had an unassisted double play off a bunt in the air. Kent then had their own two-out rally to plate three runs.
Heading into the fourth inning, the score was 8–9, Kent with the lead. Mejia stepped into the circle in the bottom of the fourth and had three consecutive strikeouts.
Millbrook then tied it up in the top of the fifth inning after Fernandes worked a walk and Renzi laid down a great bunt to force defensive miscues and score Fernandes. The bottom of the fifth saw a strikeout, bunt out, and Mejia getting dirty to stop a ground ball and secure the third out of the inning.
We had a tied ball game heading into the sixth inning! Millbrook built on its defensive momentum in the top of the sixth inning to plate four more runs. The inning started with Roberson and Malmgren getting on base to set the stage for Abby Hylan ‘25 and Mesard to have back-to-back RBIs. Gunderson then had an RBI to score Hylan before Mejia and Downs worked walks to score Mesard.
In the bottom of the sixth, Millbrook shut down Kent—including Anel Cabrera ‘25 making a great catch in right field.
In the top of the seventh, the Mustangs were not done. Malmgren hit a monster triple and was then brought home on an RBI from Hylan. The Mustangs were determined to keep Kent from scoring in the bottom of the seventh. Mejia and Downs both made some defensive plays to end the game with a Millbrook win—our first win of the season!
Downs, Malmgren, and Mesard all ended the day with three hits apiece. Meijia had three RBIs and Downs, Gunderson, Hylan, Malmgren, and Mesard each contributed two RBIs. Every Millbrook player scored at least one run, with Malmgren adding three and Fernandes, Mesard, and Roberson adding two apiece. Shout out to the entire team for their determination and belief in themselves and one another. And especially a shout out to the managers and bench players for their added energy and support. A true team effort!
We look forward to hosting Frederick Gunn on Friday.
