Millbrook at Canterbury

Millbrook visited Canterbury this afternoon and carried the momentum from the last game and played very well. The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead early in the second period on an Olivia Farrell wrister to add to a controversial Kelly Fallon off-the-skate goal in the first, and it was clear that the next goal would be a big one. Unfortunately for Millbrook, that goal went to the hosts on a good passing play, and it was 2-1 until late in the third, when the breaks evened out -- the Saints tied the game as Emma DiGiacomo shot into a dislodged net, and the stage was set for some late drama. With about a minute left, Fallon rifled a shot to the upper-right corner and her teammates celebrated what looked to be a dramatic winner, just as Canterbury was mobbing their goalie, Katie Curtin, who turned out to have made a terrific glove save. In overtime, Canterbury nearly won it in the last minute on Meg Henn's breakaway shot that rang off the crossbar. It was a fitting ending to a dead-even contest, and both teams had much to be proud of. Special mention goes to unsung forwards Devin Hardy, Marie Gray and Celia Manny, all of whom made great contributions off the bench. Even more special mention is saved for the Mr. and Mrs. Zublin, who treated the team to a great home-cooked dinner at their house in Pawling after the game.
