Millbrook suffered its most discouraging loss of the season to open the new year against a small but determined Portledge team. The hosts shot themselves in the foot in the first period, allowing not one but two short-handed goals, the first of which was an embarrassing “own goal”. Portledge added a third goal in the second period, and though Millbrook had the better of play from then on, generating 38 shots for the game, they could find only two of enough quality (from Louise Steele-Norton and Mary Rose Morrison) to cut the lead to 3-2. At that point, all the momentum was in the Mustangs’ favor, and it seemed inevitable that there would be at least a tie, but an unnecessary penalty resulted in a fourth Portledge goal to close out the game. It was a deserved win for the visitors, who skated only nine girls but were more disciplined and played better positional hockey than Millbrook. Portledge’s captain Siena Falino was easily the best player on the ice, and goaltender Jess Sarrantonio made big stops when her team needed her to.
