Millbrook took a 1-0 lead deep into the
second period playing near-perfect counter-attacking hockey, conceding shots
from the outside and catching the hosts on the break, one of which was possibly
the goal of the year by Kristen Zublin, who finished a beautiful deke
move after being set free by a long pass up ice from Kelly Fallon.
Goalternder Erin Doerrsam was as sharp as a tack, and it was going to
take another period of error-free hockey to hold or add to the lead. With
not much time in the period, though, Kent caught Millbrook on a bad defensive
change and tied it. Five or so minutes into the third, the hosts got the
vital go-ahead goal on a long floater from along the boards that fooled
Doerrsam. Millbrook responded well and looked to have a great chance to tie
when defender Mary Rose Morrison broke in front of the Kent net
but was dragged down before she could shoot. The ref was screened off,
did not make the call, and as so often happens in those situations, the hosts
scored coming back the other way with Morrison trapped up ice. On a power
play with two minutes left, Millbrook pulled the goalie to attack six-on-four,
applied great pressure, but could not sustain it and Kent finally broke out and
scored an empty-netter to clinch matters. It was a deserved win for the
home team, who had a big edge in shots, but very hard luck on the Mustangs, who
played their best game of the year, and their best period, ironically, in the
third. There were too many standout performances to mention, but captains
Allie Cavanaugh and Kealin Maloney played with inspiration,
throwing the body and setting a great example for the rest of the team.
