Millbrook Hosts Gabriel Garcia Roman Art Exhibit

We are excited to host an exhibit of Garbriel Garcia Roman's work in our Flagler Memorial Chapel.

His photo series, Queer Icons, has been exhibited across the United States and was inspired by the fresco paintings of saints that decorated the walls of his childhood church.

He focused on certain individuals with purpose - "they are so rarely represented in the art world." The halos are a symbol of his respect for his chosen subjects, who are artists and activists self-identifying with the queer community.

"I've always thought of the halo as something very powerful. It's like a badge of nobility. I wanted to represent these people as powerful saints and warriors."

His work has been featured on NPR.org, HuffingtonPost.com, and other top tier media outlets.

Roman was born in Mexico and raised in Chicago. He returned to school at age 33 to study art and honed his photography skills while discovering a passion for creating mixed-medium artwork. His art is very personal, sharing the stories of his subjects and shedding light on his upbringing.

If you are unable to view his gallery exhibit in-person, visit our online photo gallery or Roman's website.
