Studio Pottery Students Create Dinnerware for Local Restaurant

Students participating in Millbrook's Studio Pottery course recently collaborated with local chef and owner of Serevan, Serge Medikians, to create custom dinner settings for restaurant use.

Mr. Madikians acted as a client for the class project, and he visited Millbrook to offer feedback to students on what he was hoping for in a custom dinner set for his restaurant. Millbrook has worked with Serevan in the past, and this year Mr. Madikians requested dinnerware for catering:

“I am looking for big, voluptuous pieces,” he said.

After their consultation with Mr. Madikians, students went to work creating plates, serving dishes, and bowls. For many students, this was their first time attempting to create pieces at such a large scale in size, which created another opportunity for learning throughout the process.

"It was challenging to create a larger piece because I had never made something that big before. It was both frustrating and rewarding at times to watch my project evolve from the prototype to the final product. I learned a lot.” said Whittier Ambrose ‘17

Students spent about three weeks creating their pieces, and culminated their project with a special dinner where they ate with their creations at Serevan. As Millbrook has always valued sustainability, Serevan was a perfect partnership for this project becasue Mr. Madikians is dedicated to serving local and sustainable cuisine.

"The food was delicious and the dinnerware was both functional and beautiful,” said Shannon Harris, who instructs our studio pottery course at Millbrook.

The dinner was a special way to celebrate what the students had learned, as well as the successful collaboration. Thank you for hosting, Serevan!
