Short Production is Long on Talent

Millbrook's student-directed production of When Shakespeare's Ladies Meet, performed in the Chelsea Morrison Theater on Sunday, November 13th, was true to the Bard's language and spirit and a definite crowd pleaser.
Directed by VI former Chloe Gbai, When Shakespeare's Ladies Meet is a witty comedy that brings six of Shakespeare's leading female characters together. Cleopatra, Portia, Ophelia, Desdemmona, and Catherine gather to give love advice to Juliette. With only six cast members and a performance that lasts about 35 minutes, this one-act play was quick and entertaining.

Director of Theater Elaine Lifter approached Chloe to direct this one-act play; she wanted to give some of Millbrook's younger talent, who were already participating in the fall play, additional opportunity to practice and perform. It was natural for Chloe to step into a directing role, having been on the acting end of the stage for many years. Mrs. Lifter worked with Chloe to review possible productions, and Chloe eagerly jumped on board, excited at the opportunity to take on a new challenge. She quickly discovered the many responsibilities held by the director: holding auditions, assigning the roles, running rehearsals, dressing the set, making prop selections, and coordinating the lighting design with the Head of Holbrook Tech Zoe Wilson '12. This week, tech week, Chloe and the girls run through the production twice a night in full costume, hair and makeup, making sure sound and lighting cues are right.

The experience was a good one for the new director, "I really enjoyed this experience. Going over the basics was refreshing, and I enjoyed connecting with the cast as a director and being able to share my experience and knowledge." You might want to keep your eyes open for Chloe on stage next year, as she has plans to pursue theater art in college, whether that's production, direction, wirting, or acting.

The terrific cast in this production included: Annie Beyer-Chafets '15 as Cleopatra, Luciana Marquez Todeschini '15 as Portia, Starsi Howell '15 as Juliette, Victoria Haschke '14 as Ophelia, Jeannie Sohn '15 as Desdemona, and Delaney Bailey '14 as Catherine.

Congratulations to all the cast members, to Chloe, and to Stage Manager Bradley Nguyen '13 on this fall production.

Video highlights from the performance will be posted soon on our Millbrook in Motion page.
