First at New Englands!
The Boys Cross Country Team went to South Kent for the New Englands race yesterday and absolutely crushed the field. South Kent has a brutal course, with nearly no flat terrain and and the first mile is nearly entirely up a mountainside. The weather was slightly cold, but clear skies and little wind. The teams (boys and girls, JV and Varsity) all rotated through the course, supporting and pushing each other all afternoon.
The Boys Varsity finally took home first place after a few years of hoping for it. They placed first with 95 points when the next closest team ended with 176. Kazuki and Jackson both placed in the top 20, earning the option to run in the All Star Race next weekend. Unfortunately, Arthur and Alex finished in 21st and 22nd, not quite earning that recognition. The team raced spectacularly, running as a pack and finishing all 7 runners between 5th and 47th in a field of 220 runners from 33 schools.
The JV team had just as much success. Jason Lei ran a nearly perfect race and would have likely finished first if not for a fall turning into the home stretch. Jayden, right on his heals was able to place first and Jason recovered to bring in 3rd. Jayden, Jason, Chris, and both our Henrys finished in the top 20 of their race, earning the team first with 37 points compared to second place with 76. Unfortunately, Sam was unable to run due to a foot injury he was experiencing all day.
Before posting the individual results I think it worth mentioning two things. 1) the course is fantastically challenging and times are generally slower. 2) I think this race was won in the last mile. Both teams attacked the final hill and still had legs for a fantastic push in the last 3/4 of a mile. While I didn't count' I could comfortably say that every runner passed about 10 opposing runners in the last stretches of the race. Well done to all!
