Two's the charm as Steele-Norton breaks scoring record

Coach Burdis

Even rain and wind couldn't dampen the spirits on Siberia today as the Lady Mustangs overcame a sluggish start to overwhelm a hustling Miss Porters team, 4-0.  To make the day even more memorable, several records were broken, as Steele-Norton notched 2 goals in the second half of the game to tie, then break the existing record held by Fallon Cunningham, set in 1998.  Steele-Norton would end the regular season with 22 goals and 2 assists, for a total of 46 points.  Her single-season point-total also breaks the points record, also held by Cunningham.  Steele-Norton would have some company today in the record breaking department as Burdis notched her 16th assist for the year, setting a new record for the Mustangs as well.

It was too wet and cold for me to take copious game notes, so my report will be less detailed than usual. And the team knows my memory is less than stellar! We did start out slow;  MPS was 1/2 hour late and we were drenched to the bone before the opening whistle.  It would take over 20 minutes of back and forth play before Millbrook would score it's first (and only) goal of the half, as Fallon would take matters into her own hands and score on an impressive, single-handed goal where she dribbled through just about the entire MPS defense to zing a pretty shot past the goalie.  The half would end 1-0.

The Mustangs came out energized in the second half and Steele-Norton would notch her first goal at 28:11, with an assist to Fallon.  Three minutes later, on a penalty corner, the injection from Steele-Norton went to Burdis who controlled the pass, waited for the defender to commit, then neatly passed to a pouncing Chapman who zinged a shot from the top, score, assist to Burdis.  MPS never really came back after that; their wings deflated and they didn't put up too much of a fight for the rest of the game.  But the game's most exciting moment came when the MPS goalie fell on the ball and the Mustangs were awarded a stroke at 10:11.  Cool as a cucumber, Louise set up her shot and zinged it high, to the upper left corner, totally out of goalie reach, to score her record-breaker, to the ecstatic cheers of her team mates. Congratulations to the entire team for a great effort today! And thank-you to our underclassmen for organizing a wonderful (if soggy!) senior day celebration!
