The Lady Mustangs fell to a much better Kent team than we have met in years past, and perhaps Kent caught us napping just a bit. Kent's field was deceptively bumpy and no ball travelled the courses we intended, and this close game came down to a few crosses we would normally have nailed which bounced right over our sticks, and a few dodges that failed when the ball bogged down. Kent's swift forwards also capitalized on their home field comfort as passes our defense would normally stop or intercept, again, bounced right over our sticks. There were just enough of those to tip the scales against us. Our teams were evenly matched and as games go, this was a good game.
The game went end to end with both teams having opportunities but it was Kent that drew first blood when, at 15:52, one of their nimble forwards dribbled through several defenders and scored. At 10:47, Millbrook would answer back as Fallon, in a remarkable single effort, dribbled and fought her way through most of the Kent defenders to score an unassisted goal from right in front of the net. Five minutes later Kent would score again off a scrum in front of goal, a bouncing ball we couldn't clear. The half would end on a scary note as Kent fast-breaked down the field with 24 seconds on the clock and almost scored, but thanks to goalie Nelson's gutsy stop and Fracchia's quick clear, danger was averted. The score was 1-2 Kent at half.
During the second half, Kent out hustled Millbrook, earning five penalty corners to our one. But Steele-Norton, always a spark on offense, carried the ball down the left wing and crossed to Anthony who scored her first goal as a varsity player, perfectly positioned on the right wing post. A neat tip-in to tie the game at 7:35. Kent came roaring right back however. For the last two years, the Kent team buckled when we tied it up; this was a regular scenario for us, to claw our way back into a game to then watch Kent deflate. This year, they didn't deflate, and two minutes later, they scored off a cross from the right wing that was tipped in by the left wing on post. We would end the game with a penalty corner but could not capitalize.
